The Legality of Online Gambling in Missouri

In the state of Missouri, it's not legal to gamble online. This means players who log in to an online casino and place even one bet are breaking the laws and can be subject to harsh penalties, including fines and even jail time. The law states that it is illegal for any out-of-state casino to offer any sort of internet gambling to the residents of Missouri. The state laws concerning gambling as a whole and online gambling specifically are very complex and confusing. Many aren't even certain when something becomes illegal. For example, laws specifically state that it's illegal to host an online poker game in Missouri, but it appears that it's actually legal to play in one if players are using an offshore betting site.

Legislators are working on new laws that will address the confusing laws, but because of how some of the laws are written, these new regulations have to actually be written as an amendment to the state's constitution. The last time an amendment was made that addresses gambling or games of chance was in the 1980s when the constitution was changed to allow a state lottery. However, there are several different groups who are challenging the regulations regarding online gambling, and the laws may soon change.

Playing Online Verses Going to a Casino

It is, however, legal for Missouri residents to gamble in a brick and mortar casino, especially if they leave to state to do so. While this can certainly let players enjoy the thrill of gambling that many love, it also isn't quite as convenient. Many players love being able to play a few hands of blackjack or take a few spins at the roulette table, but they don't want to play for more than a few minutes or make the drive to the casino. That's why so many players like to gamble online--it's so quick and easy.

Of course, going to the casino can be fun, too. It's much easier to get caught up in the fun and excitement of the other players, plus casinos often offer food, drinks, and entertainment. There's no waiting for others to log in, plus players can truly test their skills at reading others, something that's impossible to do online.

While the citizens of Missouri may not be able to gamble online yet, they can take advantage of nearby casinos to quench their playing thirst. It's not the same, and it's not nearly as easy to do as playing online, but it can be fun in its own way.
